Spring is one of the best times of year in Arkansas. With the excitement of warmer temperatures and without the sweltering heat of summer, it is a perfect time to explore our state and take advantage of its natural beauty. We’ve put together a small list of locations around the state which would make great weekend trips this spring. Whether you prefer camping or something a little more civilized, these locations will have something for you.
1. Canoe the Spring River | Hardee, AR

The Spring River is one of Arkansas’ hidden gems. While the Buffalo River gets a lot of the praise, and rightfully so, we enjoy the Spring River for its less-crowded waters and fast-flowing water. The river is fed by Mammoth Springs, so it offers cold water year round. There are a few fast rapids on the river to keep you blood flowing, and the Game and Fish commission keeps it stocked with trout so the fishing is superb. There are a few campgrounds along the river’s banks as well as a few cabins for rent if you prefer sleeping indoors. Overall, the Spring River offers a great weekend retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
2. Enjoy Walmart-funded Paradise | Bentonville, AR

This one isn’t much of a hidden gem, but it’s still a perfect weekend getaway location for Arkansas residents. Bentonville is booming. The formerly sleepy town in the Boston Mountains now has something for everyone. You can bike along the miles of trails present in the city. Browse a world-class art collection at Crystal Bridges. Then, make your way downtown to eat at one of the dozens of trendy restaurants which have popped up in the city. This is a destination for our urban-loving readers, but we think it deserves a mention on this list.
3. Camp in the Ouachita Mountains | Wickes, AR

This might be the most obscure destination on our list, but camping at the Cossatot River State Park is a must for any Arkansan outdoor lover. This state park is remote -- located on the banks of the fast-flowing Cossatot River in the heart of the Ouachita Mountains. Yet, the river flows through rolling hills and offers peaks and vistas which rival any destination. The park offers miles of hiking trails, and you can even try your hand at rafting the river, which offers some of the most difficult rapids in Arkansas if the water is high enough. If the water is warm, jump off the low-hanging cliffs and into the pools of water underneath. This destination takes a while to get to, but the views are more than worth it.
Need Help Getting to Your Destination?

We sell a few vehicles -- particularly the Ford Bronco and Explorer -- which are perfect SUVs for exploring the great outdoors, offering 4x4 capabilities and plenty of cargo room for luggage or camping supplies. If you need a vehicle to accompany you on your spring adventures, head on down to Heartland Ford. We’d love to help you explore our beautiful state!
